Creating a Better Community

Latino Education Summit Here at PledgeCents, one thing we focus on is working with our local Houston community to do our small part to make it better. From bringing local teachers breakfast to supporting local businesses and even requiring every member of our team to do community service in Houston (we all would anyway, but it is now official company policy!), we try to do what we can. Be on the lookout for a blog post in the future about where each of our team members chooses to volunteer. As a company, we work with teachers all over the country (and hopefully someday the world), and as Houstonians, we also do our best to have a direct impact on our city. We know there is a lot of work left to be done, and we could all do an even better job helping.

As a member of the Houston Latino community, co-founder Ricky was excited to attend day two of the American Latino Center for Research, Education, and Justice Latino Education Summit at Rice University in Houston. You can read more about it on their blog here. He heard congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (pictured below) speak on what is being done to bridge the gap between impoverished Latino children and whites and Asians, and attended an open town hall forum hosted by HISD superintendent Terry Grier (also pictured below).

Both sessions urged attendees to do what Ricky and the rest of the PledgeCents team believe and practice--come together as a community and offer support in any way possible.

One of the great things about living in the age of the internet is that people’s ability to make a difference is no longer limited to their local community. We can start by working within the confines of our local community and move beyond to affect a more global community. You no longer have to simply “think globally; act locally.” You can now think globally and act both locally and globally. We work for a better Houston community and a better global community, and we encourage you to find ways to do the same. Start by choosing a classroom to support. Give what you can.

Because Every Cent Counts
