Cents in Action: Rocky's Spirit
For this week’s 'Cents in Action' post, we wanted to take the opportunity to highlight an amazing teacher in Philadelphia who raised $190 for her first cause! Jennifer Malloy, a 5th grade teacher at Bache Martin Elementary School, shares her experiences with crowdfunding on PledgeCents in the form of raw feedback below.
I love Philadelphia. I love being a teacher in Philadelphia. I love sharing literature with children.
Coming to Bache-Martin Elementary last school year, I knew that I would have the autonomy to use the Reading Workshop framework in my 5th grade classroom. Kicking off Reading Workshop in September, I realized that I did not have the resources to deliver the curriculum in the manner in which I had hoped. I spent much of the first two months of school copying full chapter books so that I could engage in workshop discussion of skills and strategies that good readers use. Once that unit was over, I knew that I could not continue to spend the time, money, and paper on giving my students this experience of reading authentic literature.
Luckily, the next novel was funded by our Home and School Association. However, moving forward to fund a novel at the end of the year was proving to be complicated. My friend Heather had mentioned PledgeCents as an excellent way to find resources for your classroom. I created a cause on a snowy day in February, and I shared it on Facebook. My final unit for the year was a fantasy reading unit. I was funded within 24 hours to purchase 25 copies of Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH! It was easy!
I highly recommend using PledgeCents. While DonorsChoose is easy, you always run the risk of not being fully-funded. PledgeCents ensures that the classrooms get the money that they so deserve!
